Abstract:Based on the SPOT5 remotely sensed imagery of Xiuning county of Anhui Province acquired in 2009 c and ArcGIS10.0, the image interpretation marks were established to collect data of sub-compartments’ boundaries and attributes. Furthermore, the forest-land structure and protection status were assessed, followed by the analyses of their functional zonation, protection and utilization orientations. The results showed that the forestland area of Xiuning was 177028.44 hm2, including 154457.32 hm2 of closed forest land, 1062.07 hm2 of sparse forest land, 14116.48 hm2 of shrub forestland, 5759.55 hm2 of immature forestland, 33.39 hm2 of nursery, 587.09 hm2 of no stumpage forestland, 1012.23 hm2 of land suitable for afforestation, and 0.31 hm2 of other land for forestry production. The majority of the forestland was closed forest land and shrub forestland, accounting for 95.2% of the total forestland area. Forest protection level was divided into four levels. The forestland area of different protection level was Ⅱ>Ⅲ>Ⅰ>Ⅳ. Forest land was divided into four main functional areas in Xiuning County, including the scenic forest and water conservation forest development zone in the north, the scenic forest and economic forest development zone in the middle, the commercial forest development zone in southwest and commercial and public welfare forest development zone in southeast Xiuning. The results would provide a foundation for assembling all types of forests in Xiuning County into one map and facilitate the computerized management of forestland resources.
